A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that provides both general and specific information about current levels of cognitive performance. Areas of assessment include an individual’s cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. To understand cognitive strengths and weaknesses, psychoeducational testing further evaluates:

Ability to learn new skills and solve problems
Attention and concentration
Short-term and long-term memory
Ability to understand and express language
Visual-spatial organization
Planning, synthesizing and organizing abilities
Academic skills

A psychoeducational evaluation is often recommended when:

  • When your child is struggling academically
  • When there is a large gap between your child’s potential and his or her academic performance
  • To document any changes in a child’s abilities or achievement since previous evaluations
  • When a child has difficulty focusing attention or sitting still for periods of time
  • When your child has difficulty completing their homework/class work
  • When a child displays difficulties with learning or memory
  • When a child has a history of neurological difficulty or developmental delay
  • When it is unclear why a child is struggling
